Which countries require international travel insurance to grant a visa or permit entry?

Contents

Whilst travel insurance is usually a choice for travellers when visiting common tourist destinations such as Spain, France or the USA, there are some countries that require a valid international travel insurance policy before they will permit entry. Here at Coverontrip travel insurance we’ve compiled this handy guide which provides details of some of the most popular tourist destinations where travel and health insurance is mandatory for visitors.

International travel insurance requirements for Ecuador

From 1st May 2018, it is mandatory for tourists to have a valid travel insurance policy when entering Ecuador. Tourists will be required to present proof that they have a valid international travel insurance policy (such as a certificate of insurance), which needs to show that it’s valid for the length of the stay and valid in Ecuador.

International travel insurance requirements for Russia

British passport holders travelling to Russia must obtain a visa before travelling, and in order to obtain a visa you’ll be required to prove you hold an international travel insurance policy which provides cover for emergency medical treatment and repatriation. A travel insurance certificate should provide all the details required by the embassy, such as the certificate that is provided when you purchase a Coverontrip travel insurance policy.

International travel insurance requirements for Belarus

British passport holders can enter Belarus for 5 days without a visa, if entry and exit is via Minsk International Airport. However you will need to provide evidence when entering the country that you hold an international travel insurance policy that provides at least 10,000 Euros of emergency medical coverage. The lowest tiered Coverontrip Holidays insurance policy provides up to £7.5m of emergency medical coverage, so this would be more than adequate to enter Belarus.

International travel insurance requirements for Cuba

British passport holders visiting Cuba as tourists need to obtain a Tourist card from a Cuban embassy before travelling. Tourists visiting Cuba are also required to have valid international travel insurance when entering the country and may be asked to provide proof of this during the immigration arrivals process.

International travel insurance requirements for Algeria

Whilst Algeria is not as popular a destination as some of the above, we thought we would include this on the list, in case anyone is planning a trip there. British passport holders wishing to visit Algeria are required to get a visa before travelling. This can take up to four weeks and includes quite a bit of paperwork, part of which requires you to provide proof of travel insurance which will cover you for the days you plan to stay.

This is not a complete list of all countries that require international travel insurance to gain entry, but is a list of some of the more popular destinations that require this.
