The best skiing destinations in Europe

Contents

Ski addicts already know that Europe is probably the best continent for skiing. It offers huge variety and unbeatable landscapes, all with good snow coverage. And of course, for us Brits it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to travel there. So in today’s Sherpa Diary post we’ve selected some of the best ski destinations in Europe. And to find out about the best skiing destinations in Austria read our previous post.

But before we hit the slopes, don’t forget the thorny issue of travel insurance. If you’re going on a skiing holiday, then make sure your travel insurance covers you for winter sports. Here at Coverontrip travel insurance we provide a range of policies that have been tailor made for winter sports holidays. You can view our policies here.

Val Thorens, France

Located very high up in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, is Val Thorens. It’s so high up in fact that it’s the highest ski resort in Europe, at 2,300m. And you can add to that height the over 600km of pistes, to also make it one of the largest linked ski resorts in the world.  It’s no wonder this is one of the Skiing meccas of Europe.

Alpe d’Huez, France

Alpe d’Huez is another legendary French ski resort, located at an altitude of 1860m. It’s located in the Western Alps, within the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Sometimes there is year round snow coverage in this resort, with the maximum snow peak usually occurring in February. But don’t be fooled, as you also get a lot of sun here. It’s also one of the few resorts in France where you’ll find a bobsleigh track.

Breuil-Cervinia, Italy

Breuil-Cervinia is an alpine resort in the Aosta Valley in northwest Italy, located at an altitude of 2,006m. Not only is it a wonderful place to ski, it also has a long and illustrious history, attracting high society families since it first opened in 1936. The facilities are some of the best in Europe, as is the snow. It’s not uncommon for snowfall well into mid-March, which allows for a very long season.

Silvretta Arena Ischgl-Samnaun, Switzerland

Known as Silvretta Arena Ischgl-Samnaun, Ischgl and Samnaun are the two sides of a wonderful skiing experience. They’re two stations joined together that give us one of the largest skiing areas in Europe. More than a few people come here to try and spot a celebrity or two. It wouldn’t be unheard of to spot Rihana, Katy Perry or Beyonce out on the pistes. Speaking of, it has more than 200 kilometres of skiable snow, all at an altitude of around 2,800m.
